Master of Office Politics

What happens in your Office? antics, buffoonery, clowning around, foolishness, hanky-panky, high jinks, hokey-pokey, horseplay, misbehavior, mischief, monkeyshines, pranks

Amy (63.176.159.77) -

I am the master of Office Politics and would like to answer anyone's questions that needs some advice on how to handle a situation.

At my work, all the items listed above pertain to my place of employment. As a manager, I try to eliminate the problems as I see them happening. This approach has not indeared me to my workers, but I figure I'm there to do a job, not make friends.

Where I work, our boss does not have kids. She has made it known that she's not interested in having kids in the future either. She always alienates the gals who do have kids and when one of them calls in a personal day due to their child being sick or whatever, you can tell she is pissed. When a person calls in who doesn't have any kids she's acts overly concerned and tells them not to worry about it and take as much time as they need. She just ticks me off!!

Comment #3 lois from new york -

Wow Janet, that sucks! I am someone who does not want to have children. But i would never judge others and i realize how HARD it is to raise children... that's the reason why I am not having one! Heh. That's really unfair how she does that!! :(

Boss picking favorites. I used to have a job that was a sales position. And, our boss would help the morning shift reach goal, and the evening shift (which I was on) never got help. She would help them with sales so their commissions were higher than ours. We finally confronted her that we knew about it and she started evening out the help so everyone got bumps in commission.

I was never good at office politics. I always wanted to just do the work and have everyone leave me alone and let me do it. And I asked a LOT of questions. I wanted to know WHY we were doing things the way we were doing them. Mostly because if I knew the reason, I could do my job better. The bosses wanted me to interact with others except them and shut up about everything else.

Comment #6 John from Johnstown -

Office politics is a big reason why I now work from home. I was so tired of those younger kids right out of college trying to act like they're know it alls and they end up moving up faster than anyone else. These kids need to learn to show some respect.

I absolutely hate office politics and I make sure I stay as far away from it as possible. There isn't an office in the world that doesn't have politics happening.

So my suggestion is to keep away from all the politics and just do your job the best you can.

Unfortunately, there are some bosses who don't understand women with children and then there are bosses that don't understand women at all.

I had a boss who never got sick and never took a sick day and couldn't understand why everyone else did when he passed on his colds, etc. to them. He used to get very upset. Then one day he didn't show up for work and it was a full day before we found out he was in the hospital with pneumonia. After that, he didn't object to people being off because he ended up off for almost a month.

I don't know what to suggest for the women with children because there is really nothing you can do there but take the scorn and look after them.

Comment #8 Joe from South America -

There are also employees who forget that work time is for work!

Comment #9 Jules from Las Vegas -

Heh heh, Joe. There are so many people who don't work in my office during company time either. I work from home three days a week and go into the office on the other two days. We all have a rotating schedule. So, it amazes me that these people who are in the office spend practically their whole day making personal calls to schedule doctor's appointments, etc. Do those on your work from home days!! Geez.
