How about grants? Can a person apply for a grant for their own business? My sister is thinking of opening up a boutique and wondered if she could get a grant to help her out. I wasn't sure about that one. Does anyone know?

I think she can. I often ehar about people getting grants or loans to start up a new business with. It may depend on what kind of business it is. For example if one wanted to start a new local shelter for animals, they would apply for a grant from animal rights agencies and so on. But for a boutique... I'm not all too sure? Maybe google "boutique + grants"? Worth a shot. Good luck to your sister! :)

I agree, grants are a great way to go. You should be able to find many to apply to, but you may get only one or possibly, unfortunately none. It can't hurt to apply though.

Usually there are government agencies that will help an entrepreneur to get started by giving them grants. One of the first things you should do is contact your local government office to find out where and how to apply for one.

The governments want people to start their own businesses because they then can collect more taxes. So in most States and Provinces there are offices where you can apply.

What you have to do is call your local government office and they can start you on the path or you can google your State or Provincial government site and a lot of times the forms for applying for different things are right on the internet.

I would definitely tell her to give it a try. She might be able to find some info out at her local library. The worse they could say is no but it is worth trying out. She should have a clear idea of what she wants to do and a business plan would be a bonus.

I always hear people saying that you can get a business grant but I haven't met anyone that has received a business grant. Do I have to go through my local business office. I will take you guys advice and do some more research.
