talk - Small Business Marketing

Search engine hits

Marketing for the small business.

Turtle from the Pond -

How do you get your site on the search engines? I don't want spam, I just want to be seen? One of my sites is picked up on Google when I search for one of my nicknames, but I'm somewhere down page two. I want to be more prominent. How do you get that?

One way is when you design your website, usually in the top of the HTML coding there is a section where they ask for keywords that describe your website, fill it up with all the keywords you can think up.

Also, mentioning certian keywords in your website's content often will help people find your website easier if they search that certain keyword via google.

Also, some people pay certain SEO companies to help increase your website hits. You can find more information here:

I like the question; it's what I was thinking. LOL! But what if you don't have control of the HTML? Then what do you do? Oh, you said put in keywords. Like what?

Wow. Do you think searching has lost it?

Um.. this is the first entry on that page:

Search is Dead

Behold the Power of Yahoo!'s Search Subscriptions

Now, maybe I'm being a bit critical, but Oct 11, 2005 is not something I'd use in conjuction with "today"... as in seoTODAY

Ha! I did not notice that it was in 2005 and how ironic the first thing says Search is dead :P But really it does have lots of good ifnromation if you search the site. Too bad it stopped being updated from the looks of it.

OOPS! I never noticed that :( So sorry about that. When I created my website, that site actually had a lot of great information to help me with the SEO aspect to it.

George, if you dont have control of the HTML.. Then yes using keywords will help. Like i assume if you dont have control of the HTML side of designing, it probably is a blog or something and that means you still at least have control over the text section. Make sure to repeat certain phrases and words on whatever topic you are writing about.

Example: your blog is about selling hats that are crocheted.

Keywords would be: crochet, crocheting, hats, selling hats, crafts, hat sales, hat discounts, hat blogs, crocheted hat blogs

If you use these words as often as you can, someone who googles up the word 'hat' may come across your blog that way. It really depends though, if lots of people blog about hats and use keywords in their HTML design, they will have a betetr chance of being listed above you. But stil worth a shot!

I created my own website and it does what I need it to fir right now, but down the road I'm going to want to attract more attention. Unless you really understand the SEO game, which I partially do, you will need a professional web designer who understands optimization.
